And my journey to seeking natural, pain-relieving solutions started unexpectedly with my aunt.
You see, in the last years of my aunt’s life…

Back when she was still well…
She was always the life of the party.
As a child, I remember her as a joyful person who was always smiling, laughing and baking me her famous homemade cookies.
But as the years went on, she stopped smiling.

Suffering until the end, my aunt passed pre-maturely - at an age that was far too young.
It crushed me to see my aunt go that way.
She’d lived life as a ball of joyous energy, spreading contagious laughter wherever she went…
Yet life had punished her with debilitating pain, right until her final moment.
It was unfair.
And it left a deep, bitter impression on me.
So when I had the opportunity to lead a start-up company that was focused on developing alternative, holistic medicine for those with long-term, persistent pain…
I jumped onboard immediately.
I couldn’t help my aunt - but I realized I could help others.
My primary role here was in research - developing safe but effective natural solutions to pain.
As such, I was often in contact with our customers.
We saw some great success in helping those with joint pain.
But my team and I had a loftier goal - to solve all types of pain, not just achy joints.
And in 2018, when CBD went legal…
Our customers were the first to ask if we were going to offer CBD for pain management.
At the time, I’d only heard about CBD in passing.

I started by travelling across America to meet cannabis plant farmers.
I gathered hundreds of samples from them…
Because I had heard from many folks that CBD was a “hit or miss.”
There weren’t any clinical studies that had tried to tackle this problem…
So I was determined to do the testing myself…
And see exactly what factors contributed to the effectiveness of CBD.
With the samples I had gotten, I started testing them out with small focus groups of our customers.
Some saw mild improvement.
But more disappointingly…
Many felt ZERO effects.
Of course, I suggested increasing the amount of CBD they were taking (i.e. increasing the milligrams).
And I tested out isolates, full-spectrum, nano delivery systems and so on...
But for some reason…
None of it was working consistently.
For folks who didn’t feel any difference after taking CBD…
No matter how we played around with the dosage, spectrum or delivery system…
NOTHING worked.
I didn’t know why at the time…
But there was no “middle ground” at all in terms of pain-relieving effects.
Results were extremely hit or miss.
Was CBD really just a placebo effect?
But then, what about the clinical studies that have scientifically proven that CBD DOES have medicinal properties?
Were they all bogus too?
I had to know why these results were so random.
But I wasn’t going to find the answer from other clinical researchers.
Because the scientific community was divided into 2 groups:
Group #1 - those who saw anecdotal results first-hand and were convinced in their own minds that CBD had an effect…
And Group #2 - those that claimed there weren’t enough clinical studies to prove that CBD had any non-placebo effects.
But no one was really looking into WHY there was no “middle ground” when it came to CBD.
I decided to tackle this project myself.
But I didn’t make this decision lightly.
Because I had already sunk a huge amount of my own money and time into testing CBD with my customers…
My wife was worried this was turning into an unhealthy obsession.
But I just couldn’t get the image of my aunt out of my mind.
This question burned in my brain, day and night:
If CBD had been around back then…
Would my aunt have been saved from all that pain and suffering?
And even though it was too late to help my aunt…
I knew there’d be thousands of other folks who were living in pain right now…
Who, just like my aunt - prescription meds couldn’t help.
That’s why I was determined to see it through to the end.
I had to push on to find out exactly if CBD was really just a placebo effect…
Or if there was some other factor that nobody had figured out yet.
So I got on a plane once more…
And went out to meet more cannabis plant farmers.
Because I had come to the conclusion...
If CBD dosage, or spectrums, or delivery systems and so on made no difference…
I figured it might have something to do with the SOURCE of the CBD.
Meaning, the type of cannabis plant the CBD was being extracted from.
And through one of my conversations with the various cannabis plant farmers I met…
One of them mentioned something extremely important…
That turned EVERYTHING around for me.
One of the farmers told me he’d just heard
a very strange rumor...
There was a company that had popped out of nowhere a few years ago…
And they’d been getting a bunch of patents granted left and right.
Curious, I asked the farmer what exactly they were patenting.
And the farmer told me that this company was patenting genetic “strains” of specific cannabis plants.
Wait a minute.
Why were these companies patenting cannabis plant genes?
Patenting is a tedious and expensive process…
And you wouldn’t do it unless you felt it’d give you a strong, competitive advantage.
Did these companies know something I didn’t?
That night, I got back on a plane home...
With my mind spinning with questions on why these companies were patenting cannabis “genetic strains.”
The moment I arrived home, I kissed my wife and put my kids to bed...
And bee-lined to my laptop.
The first place I decided to start with, was the “strains” of cannabis plants...
So what are cannabis “genetic strains?”
Well, you probably already know that CBD is a compound extracted from the cannabis plant.
But there isn’t just ONE type of cannabis plant...
There are hundreds of different types called “strains.”
And just like how different “genetic strains” of dogs are called “breeds...”
(Like corgi, labrador, chihuahua and more)...
Cannabis plants can be split into breeds too, based on their genes.
Each “genetic strain” causes the plant to have different flavors, aromas and even varying cannabinoid profiles.
(Cannabinoids are compounds like CBD, THC etc.).
So why was this mysterious company suddenly patenting these strains?
To find the answer to this question, I had to dig deeper.
And I found it, hidden inside a relatively obscure clinical study...
Run by some of the most prestigious neurologists in the world.
In fact, this study was conducted by Dr. Eric Baron - neurologist at the Cleveland Center for Neuro-Restoration...
A man who’s repeatedly been named one of America’s Top Physicians...
And has over 30 peer reviewed articles and studies in neurology...3
Dr. Baron and his colleagues studied something that NOBODY else had been looking into.4
In a clinical study published just 2 years ago...
They tested to see whether there was a connection between the relief patients got from pain...
And the various types of cannabis strains that were used for treatment.
What they found shocked me.
Because these neurologists confirmed that different strains had varying degrees of effectiveness for specific health problems!
For example...
A patient suffering from pain preferred a DIFFERENT type of strain...
Versus someone who had anxiety.
It was clear that each strain had something special about them...
Which created a unique combination of cannabinoid profiles...
That was specifically targeting different areas like pain, anxiety and so on.
In other words...
This study revealed that cannabis strains worked kind of like blood transfusions.
Just like how a person with Type A blood shouldn't get a transfusion of Type B...
You shouldn’t be getting CBD extracted from the wrong strain of cannabis for your health needs.
But conversely...
When you DO get CBD extracted from the right cannabis strain...
It’s like an elixir of life for your body!
This also explained why the DOSE of CBD, delivery system or spectrum hardly mattered…
UNLESS you got the strain right first.
Continuing with the blood transfusion analogy above…
It’s no use to pump MORE Type B blood into a person who has Type A blood.
Or use some fancy transfusion technology to increase the efficiency in “delivering” the blood to the patient.
It just won’t help them…
Because from the get-go, they’re getting the wrong type of blood for their body!
In the same way, if you’ve got CBD extracted from a strain that’s more suited toward anxiety…
But you’re trying to use that strain to manage pain…
It’s not going to do you much good.

And it was these thousands of different strains that were causing CBD to be such a “hit or miss” for many folks.
Because everyone was taking CBD non-discriminately for a wide range of health problems…

Did you ask the seller what strain the CBD was extracted from?
I’d wager a guess that you didn’t…

All in all, the implications of this study was GROUNDBREAKING.

Unfortunately, there weren’t anyone else that had even thought to test the thousands of different cannabis strains that were out there.
The lack of supporting studies disappointed me...
But it also made sense.
Because research licenses for cannabis are still very difficult to obtain (because the plant is still considered a schedule I drug5)...
And most studies were focusing on experimenting with CBD isolates without considering the strain.
That’s why the general public hardly knew about this landmark discovery.
You can search ANY community about CBD…
And you’ll find most folks are still talking about trying different milligrams of CBD…
Or getting full-spectrum or trying out different delivery systems (like nano/liposomals).
But at the end of the day…
Most people give up, thinking that “CBD just doesn’t work for me.”
The reality is…
We may have been looking at the WRONG factor this entire time!
Because the clinical study I showed you above was no fluke…
It was tested rigorously and peer-reviewed by some of the best scientists in the world…
And their results showed that the strain may be the most important factor you need to get right FIRST…

A few years ago, a mysterious company called BioTech Institute had popped out of nowhere.
No one knew who was behind this company.
But rumors were floating around that BioTech was founded by a secretive billionaire with unclear motives.
Since 2014, they’d been filing for patents like crazy…
AND had been getting each of them granted, back-to-back.
Now keep in mind…
It’s hard enough to just get ONE patent granted.
The patenting process can take YEARS.
And it costs a small fortune to boot.
Yet Biotech was snatching up patents on cannabis-extraction processes left and right.
And when CBD went legal with the 2018 Farm Bill…
They had been grabbing handfuls of patents on specific genetic STRAINS of cannabis plants.
These are just a few examples of the patents they’d been granted…
To a staggering total of FIFTEEN.
More specifically, they were patenting genetic strains.
Remember, the groundbreaking study from neurologist Dr. Baron revealed...
You need to get the right STRAIN first…
BEFORE you even think about the milligrams, delivery systems or spectrum.
And based on how BioTech was grabbing specific patents on cannabis strains…
It seemed they’d already caught onto this secret!
In other words, BioTech already knew that the strain was the most important factor.
Also, before I go any further…
Let me jump ahead a little and tell you:
The patents Biotech has are not narrow ones.
These are UTILITY patents - the strongest, strictest kind.
It gives BioTech the power to sue anyone…
Growers, shops and researchers - who even come just a little close to their strains.
Or if they feel like it, BioTech can hit them with a hefty licensing fee…
Filling their pockets up with pure profits.
Here’s how this ploy works:
Let’s say a farmer pays BioTech to grow their strain of cannabis.
They’d first have to pay a hefty sum to buy the seeds from BioTech.
And even after they grow the plants...
They CAN’T use the new seeds made by the plants they grew.
No, because BioTech “owns” that particular strain...
These growers can only buy more patented seeds.
So for each of these patents…
BioTech has a never ending CASH COW that keeps making them more money on autopilot.
And right now…
The cannabis and CBD market is projected to hit $40 BILLION in market value…7
Which would make it the second most valuable crop in America, right after corn.
Meaning, if you’ve got enough utility patents on the RIGHT strains of cannabis…
I.e. the ones that actually produce effects…
You’ve got the entire $40 Billion market in the palm of your hand.
All you gotta do is squeeze and collect the cash.
Then again, this was nothing new.
There’s a long history of greedy corporations and institutions - like the Enron scandal, Lehman Brothers (2008 financial crisis)...
And more recently, you might have heard about the Turing Pharmaceuticals scandal…8
Where the CEO Martin Shkreli raised the cost of a life-saving drug by 5,000% (from $13.50 to $750 per pill)...
When it costs them LESS than a dollar to make.
Greed is at the core of every one of these scandals…
And perhaps BioTech would be next.
Piece by piece, it all began to make sense why BioTech was patenting these strains.
If you had a specific strain that was extremely effective for pain relief…
AND you had a patent on it…
The whole world would be forced to constantly pay you just to use the seeds of that patented plant.
Like Turing Pharmaceuticals - BioTech would have absolute control over the price of their patented seeds…
And if they decided to steeply raise the price, no one could complain.
It would be an investment that was worth the effort of patenting…
And the end-consumer (you) would shoulder the burden of these increased prices.
I know this sounds bleak.
And I don’t derive any joy from saying these things…
But I feel it's my duty to report to you the full, transparent truth.
Fortunately, I’d soon find that one of the last remaining “heirloom” plants in America…
May hold the key to fighting back against these greedy corporations.
And this would lead me to discover what might be…
The world’s first ever “strain” of CBD that works specifically for pain.
But before I get too far ahead of myself...
There’s something else I need to show you.
You see, I discovered that certain industry insiders were already aware this was happening.
For example...
Mowgli Holmes - CEO of Phylos Bioscience 9 - a company that owns a massive database of cannabis genetics - said this about BioTech:
“Utility patents are big. Scary. All of cannabis could be locked up. They (BioTech) could sue people for growing in their own backyards.”
In other words…
Both the CEO of Phylos Biosciences AND BioTech know that the money is in patenting the right strain.
Because it’s the medicinal properties in the STRAIN that contains the right profile for pain-relief.
Meaning, you need a specific strain for long-term, persistent pain.
And separate strain for anxiety and so on.
Notice none of these business moguls are talking about “taking more milligrams of CBD.”
Nor are they talking about isolates or full-spectrum.
Or nano tech or CBD digestibility.
Because none of that stuff matters unless you’ve got the right strain.
These companies care about one thing - and one thing only - getting control of the most effective strains.
Remember, whoever owns the strain, owns the market.
And if you want CBD to relieve your pain…
You’ve GOT to get the right strain too.
But don’t lose hope, because BioTech hasn’t managed to patent every effective strain out there.
Mr. Holmes, the CEO from Phylos Bioscience said it best:

And I’d soon find this statement to be completely true.

But first, I’d learn this corporate monopolization of the cannabis market would get A LOT worse.
Because it wasn’t JUST BioTech vying for absolute dictatorship of this $40B market.
Some of the BIGGEST cannabis companies out there have already caught onto what they were doing.
They can’t contest BioTech’s powerful utility patents…
So they’ve gone in a completely different, but WORSE direction.
And that’s to genetically engineer their OWN strains of cannabis plants.
In other words, GMO (genetically modified) cannabis is already happening right now.
And GMO cannabis would be a “loophole” for these companies to get around BioTech’s utility patents.
For example, Canopy Growth Corporation - the LARGEST legal cannabis company in the world…11
Valued at $6.86 BILLION dollars, recently paid more than $300 Million in cash and shares to acquire Ebbu - a gene-editing company…12
You can bet dollars to donuts that Canopy Growth Corp will be creating their own GMO strains of cannabis to combat BioTech’s patents.
What’s worse, a company called Trait Biosciences has raised another $12.3 Million after creating the world’s first TRUE GMO cannabis plant.13 14 15
These are just a few examples of the giants who are looking to combat BioTech’s plans to control the cannabis and CBD market with GMO.
They all want a slice of this $40 Billion dollar pie.
Remember, whoever owns the strain, owns the market!
Because all of these shady corporations know it’s the STRAIN that matters.
Not milligrams of CBD. Not the nano delivery system. And certainly not isolates or full-spectrum.
None of that matters unless you get the right strain first.

Between giants like BioTech and various other players in the cannabis industry.

Because they know consumers will buy solutions that WORK.
All in all, this scares me. And it ought to scare you too.
Because GMO is a step in the WRONG direction.
Remember what happened with the GMO-seed company Monsanto, who tried to splice fish genes into a tomato…16
And the public went into an uproar to protest against it?
Maybe you also remember that much of this GMO produce went on to sell at Walmart WITHOUT labels?17

Roughly 30 years ago… A secretive German experiment with GMO almost ended ALL living plant life on Earth.
I’m not kidding.
Back in 1990, a German company modified the genes of a bacterium called “Klebsiella planticola” to efficiently fermentate plant waste.19
Luckily, before it was released to the world…
Another doctor tested this same GMO bacteria and found that it had killed ALL the plants in her lab by overloading the soil with excess alcohol (a by-product of the bacteria).
This study halted the release of this GMO bacteria…

Well, most of these companies use cannabis that’s been selectively breeded.
This is different from GMO…
But still NOT helpful to you, as the end-consumer.
Here’s why:
Selective breeding is a process of breeding cannabis plants with desirable genes.21
The goal is to create a new “hybrid” plant that contains desirable traits from both parents.
With the competition in the CBD and cannabis industry right now…
There’s been a big push to do more selective breeding to create new strains.22
It’s not as bad as GMO…
But it’s still not helpful in solving your health problems.
Because cannabis seed breeders are more concerned with making MONEY than making you well.
You see, the primary focus of breeding is to create new strains that have high levels of CBD, but low THC.
(Since the laws state that your CBD has to be below 0.3% THC).
As a result, this makes CBD cheaper for them to produce (since each plant is genetically selected to produce more CBD)...
And doing this increases their profit margins…

Again, most companies are too busy competing for lower costs and higher profits…
So all in all, neither GMO or selective breeding bodes well for you.
And between the arms race going on with GMO companies and BioTech…

I fell smack bang in the middle…
Caught between a rock and a hard place.
Of course, I had zero interest in using GMO plants.

With no regard for whether or not the CBD was even having any effect for their customers.
Instead, I was determined to find the right strain.
