As the lives of many people around the world have been changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many are looking for ways to alleviate stress and anxiety. Self-care is as important as ever as we all navigate through these uncertain times. With us all stuck inside for the foreseeable future, it’s especially important to keep taking care of yourself.

The practice of self-care at home can range from taking a long bubble bath to giving yourself a mani-pedi at home. Everyone tends to have a different way that they take time to themselves to unwind. Self-care items have become a major industry since the trend became a common practice, and there are dozens of ways people can create a safe space to relax and help reduce anxiety.

We got curious to see what kind of self-care products are most popular, so we decided to do some research. We searched for over 50 different self-care items to see which ones had the highest search volume by state and throughout the nation. You can see the results of our study below.

There was a wide variety of results for the top-searched self-care item in each state, which just goes to show you that there is no right or wrong way to practice self-care. The top-searched items ranged from incense and essential oils to set the mood for relaxation to exercise-related recovery products such as foam rollers and yoga mats. Some states, such as Virginia and Colorado, had more of a tendency to go for organizational planners, while others wanted a product that would help keep their hands busy and their minds blank, such as the adult coloring books which took the top spot in Missouri and Wisconsin.

We did see some trends when we broke down the results by region. Unsurprisingly, the frigid Midwest had the highest search volume for heated or weighted blankets, while the South favored the light scent of lavender or essential oils which will make their indoor space feel just as warm and welcoming as their gardens in the summer. The Northeast and the Western regions favored luxury hair and skin-care products above other self-care items.

The overall search trends in self-care items proved that lavender and other essential oils are the most popular overall self-care items in the US since in 10 states they were the top-searched item. However, they were closely followed by face masks and serums that people like to use as a way to do something nice for their skin while unwinding at the end of the day or week. Weighted and heated blankets were also very popular, as were sound machines that can be used to increase the quality of sleep that people get.

There is no right or wrong way to practice self-care and these products represent just some of the popular items people tend to use to help them relax and take a moment for themselves. They tend to invite relaxation, and provide a moment of quiet for the consumer.
